Con un comunicato stampa pubblicato sul sito ufficiale, la SARU ha reso ufficiale i rumours che si inseguivano da qualche tempo circa il futuro di due franchigie – Toyota Cheetahs e Southern Kings – che dal 2018 non prenderanno più parte al Super Rugby.
Mentre i Cheetahs “have opted for a settlement with SA Rugby regarding their Vodacom Super Rugby Participation Agreement. The Toyota Cheetahs did not take part in the criteria process as they had an agreement in place till 2020, but the Board of the Cheetahs have decided on an amicable settlement with SA Rugby.
This will allow the Toyota Cheetahs to explore other international competition opportunities, according to Harold Verster, CEO of the Toyota Cheetahs (…)”, per quanto riguarda i Kings – che l’ex chief executive dei Southern Spears, Tony McKeever, aveva liquidato con parole molto dure solo qualche mese fa: “the Kings brand is so tarnished and damaged beyond repair, like Chernobyl, that no sponsor or corporate would ever consider associating themselves with the Kings” – si sono detti “excited about new playing frontiers. The Southern Kings will embrace the chance to explore new playing opportunities in view of the strategic SANZAAR decision to revamp the Vodacom Super Rugby competition, the franchise and SA Rugby announced on Friday.”
Il futuro delle due franchigie sudafricane sembra ormai scritto, perchè il “visionario” CEO di PRO12 Rugby, Martin Anayi, è pronto ad allargare la competizione celtica – attratto anche dai soldi promessi dalle televisioni sudafricane – a quattordici squadre e, secondo BBC Wales, il PRO14 potrebbe diventare realtà già dalla stagione 2017/18.
Sembra, però, molto improbabile che in settembre vedremo le due squadre pro scozzesi sfidare le due – o una delle due – franchigie sudafricane, anche perchè per far allargare il PRO12 bisogna che tutte le squadre siano pronte a prender il via – e il futuro delle Zebre Rugby, al momento, sembra molto più che in bilico.
Vedremo cosa succederà, ma è certo che il rugby celtico come lo conosciamo oggi ha davvero i giorni contati. È notizia di pochissimi minuti fa, intanto, che il Benetton Rugby Treviso ha annunciato di aver posticipato la campagna abbonamenti “a data da destinarsi”. Primo, possibile indizio dell’allargamento?
